Easy Stuffed Donuts

There are few foods more heavenly than donuts fresh from the deep fryer. So, why are you settling for stale store-bought donuts when they're so easy to make at home? Chef Jeremy has a super simple recipe for drop donuts - stuffed with your favorite fillings!

2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/3 cup bourbon barrel smoked sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 vanilla bean, scraped, seeds removed

oil (for frying)

squirt bottles of your favorite fillings such as chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, custard or anglaise, or caramel

Heat oil in a saucepan to 350 degrees.

Mix dry ingredients together in a medium sized mixing bowl.

Now make a well in the dry ingredients and add egg and milk.

Whisk together slowly to form a thick batter.

Use a small scoop or two spoons and carefully drop tablespoons of batter into the hot oil.

Fry until golden brown on all sides (about 3 minutes).

Remove the donuts from the oil with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel lined plate.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar.

When the donuts cool to the touch, pierce with a squirt bottle and fill with desired flavor.
